System 01 · Think Differently

The two most powerful words you'll ever speak

For most of my life, what followed “I am” was a lie. Here's the room where that changed, and the swap that starts everything.

For most of my life, I believed I was inadequate.

Nobody sat me down and told me that. Life just kept handing me evidence. I was the runt. Gap in my teeth. Three cousins who were all athletes. A father who battled alcohol and was only around when he was sober. I played, but I never got the celebrations. I got cut from the basketball team. My parents weren't in the stands. It was always somebody else who let me in.

So I built a sentence out of all that evidence. I never said it out loud, but I lived by it every single day: I am not enough.

That sentence went everywhere I went. It went to college with me, and I dropped out still feeling inadequate. It came into my marriage. It almost turned me into the exact man I swore I'd never be.

The room

Years later, I was at an engineering conference in Oregon, just south of Roseburg. We had to go around the table and introduce ourselves. And I did the thing I'd done my whole life. I scanned the room and counted.

One. I was the only Black man at the table.

The kid I used to be would have shrunk in that seat. But something had changed in me. When it got to my turn, I stood up and I said four words:

“Hi, I am Demorrious.”

And I owned it. I wasn't apologizing for being there. I deserved to be in that room, and they had no choice but to see me as me.

That sentence is where the name of this whole thing comes from. IAM University started in that room.

The two most powerful words you speak are “I am.” Whatever follows them, your life spends its energy proving.

Identity is the root system

Here's what I see now that I couldn't see then. The support was always there. Coaches who pulled us out of the neighborhood to play. People at the rec center. A professor who pushed me before I had the eyes to recognize it. They kept letting me in.

I just hadn't built the identity to receive it.

That's why I call identity the root system. Everything else grows from it: your work, your faith, your relationships, your money. You can water the leaves all day long. If the root is saying “I am not enough,” the whole tree spends its energy proving that sentence right.

Underneath every habit you've failed to keep is a sentence. It starts with “I am.”

Old sentence, new sentence

System 01 in A Better Me is Think Differently, and it starts right here. Not with attitude. Nobody's asking you to smile harder at a real problem. Perspective is position: where you're standing when you look. And position can be moved.

Here's the loop most of us are caught in. The sentence picks the lens. The lens picks the evidence. And the evidence hardens the sentence. “I am stuck” builds a lens that finds stuckness everywhere it looks. “I am behind” turns every scroll through your phone into a courtroom. That loop will run your whole life if you let it.

So we break it at the sentence.

The old sentence

“I am stuck.” “I am behind.” “I am too small for this.”

The reset

“I am an overcomer. Where I stand, I can see clearly, and I choose my perspective on purpose.”

My reset didn't start with a motivational quote. It started with my own name, said out loud, in a room where I used to shrink. After that room, I went back to school. An associate's. A bachelor's. A master's. Now a doctorate in progress. Same man. Different sentence.

I'm not telling you that to impress you. I'm telling you because I know the old sentence feels like the truth. It isn't. It's just the one you've repeated the longest.

This week, you're going to find yours, write the one that replaces it, and say it until your feet start standing somewhere new. It's simple. It is not small.
